costume designer, and his father, Samuel
Nowlin Reeves Jr., was an American from Hawaii with Chinese, Portuguese,
English, and Irish heritage. Keanu’s name means "cool breeze over the mountains" in Hawaiian. His parents
divorced when he was just three years old, and he was raised primarily by his
mother.
After the divorce,
Patricia moved frequently, taking Keanu and his sister Kim Reeves from Lebanon to
Australia, then to New York City, and eventually settling
in Toronto, Canada, where Keanu
spent most of his childhood and teenage years. He became a naturalized Canadian
citizen and identifies strongly with his Canadian upbringing.
