Early Life and Education

 

Ian McKellen grew up in Wigan and later Bolton, in the industrial north of England. His father, Denis Murray McKellen, was a civil engineer, and his mother, Margery Lois Sutcliffe, was a homemaker. He lost his mother to cancer when he was just 12.

 

McKellen developed a love for acting early on, attending plays with his family. He attended Bolton School , where he performed in school plays, and later studied English literature at St Catharine's College , Cambridge , graduating in 1961. While at Cambridge, he was active in the Marlowe Society, performing alongside future stars like Derek Jacobi and Trevor Nunn.

Ian McKellen has never married and does not have children. He came out as gay in 1988 during a BBC interview in opposition to the controversial Section 28, a UK law that banned the "promotion" of homosexuality in schools. McKellen began his acting career on the stage. He joined the Belgrade Theater in Coventry in 1961 and went on to perform in the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre.
