 Early Life and Education

 

Born to Heather Joy Arrington, a former professional tennis player, and Steven Fanning, a former minor league baseball player turned electronics salesman, Dakota grew up in a supportive and athletic family. Her younger sister, Elle Fanning , is also a well-known actress.

 

Dakota was raised in Georgia but moved with her family to Los Angeles when her talent for acting became evident. She attended Campbell Hall School in Studio City, California, where she balanced academics with her acting career. She later studied at New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study, graduating with a degree in Women's Studies, focusing on the representation of women in film and culture.

Fanning's acting debut came at age five in a Tide commercial, but her breakout role was in the 2001 film I Am Sam, where she starred alongside Sean Penn. Her performance as Lucy earned her critical acclaim and made her the youngest person ever nominated for a SAG Award.

 

She went on to appear in several hit films as a child, including Uptown Girls (2003), Man on Fire (2004), War of the Worlds (2005), Charlotte's Web (2006), and voiced the title character in Coraline (2009).

 

Transitioning into more mature roles, she played Jane Volturi in The Twilight Saga, Cherie Currie in The Runaways (2010), and starred in The Secret Life of Bees, Now Is Good, and Effie Gray. She continued her evolution with roles in Ocean's 8 (2018), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), and the TV series The Alienist (2018–2020).
