Her father, Emilio Diaz, was of Cuban descent and worked for an oil company, while her mother, Billie Early, was of German, English, and Native American ancestry and worked as an import/export agent. Diaz attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where she was a schoolmate of rapper Snoop Dogg.
At the age of 16, she began her career as a fashion model, signing with Elite Model Management and traveling around the world, working for top fashion labels and magazines. She did not attend college, opting instead to pursue modeling and eventually acting.
